The European Parliament wants to be one of the first to react to the new Lisbon Treaty. Its Constitutional Affairs Committee therefore approved, on 23 January in Brussels, a motion for a resolution from Inigo Mendez de Vigo (EPP-ED, Spain) and Richard Corbett (PES, UK).
Adopted by 20 votes in favour, six against and no abstentions, the text supports the treaty signed in Lisbon on 13 December last year. For MEPs, it brings a "substantial improvement" to the existing treaties and allows for the Union's greater democratic responsibility, more rights for citizens and better functioning of the institutions.
