I SUSPECT we consumers are all guilty of it, we are a nation of shoppers who are prepared to pay over the odds for goods, based purely on the label attached to them, sometimes no matter what the price.

So it is in the world of antiques and we collectors are among the snobbiest of all consumers.

But the more I visit auctions, antiques fairs and flea markets, the more immune I become to the serried row after row of largely massproduced objects which are valued not on their merits as works of art, but almost entirely because they were made by a company with a god name that is now no longer in business.
