BURLINGTON, Vt. (FNS)--Vermont is getting a Wal-Mart this fall. Finally.
After a four-year struggle, Wal-Mart is set to open its first Vermont store in September, but only after successful lobbying by preservationists who convinced the Bentonville, Ark., retail megagiant to conform to the state's small-town scale.
The new store will be located in a 50,000-square-foot former Woolworth's in a shopping center in Bennington, in southwestern Vermont. When the store opens its doors, just in time for the back-to-school season, Vermont will lose its distinction as the only state in the country without a Wal-Mart. More than 2,100 Wal-Marts are operating nationwide.
