Article: Defense appropriations passes House; conference slated to start.(FY '96 defense appropriations bill)

The House Thursday night passed 294-125 a $244.2 billion FY '96 defense appropriations bill that provides $857 million less than the FY '95 level and $7.8 billion above the Clinton administration's request.

The bill, which includes $493 million more for the B-2 stealth bomber, makes substantial boosts to numerous weapons modernization programs. Closely mirroring the House defense authorization bill, the appropriations legislation removes dollars from non-traditional military programs like environmental cleanup and defense conversion.
