A female kangaroo bursts through a tangle of branches and bounds across the field. She bounces toward a patch of green grass, leaping two car lengths per hop. Suddenly, she slams to a stop. A baby pops its head out of a pocket on her belly and calmly looks around.

It's hard to believe the baby kangaroo survived such a wild ride. But tucked inside its mother's pouch, the joey is as safe as a baby in a crib.
