Sep. 8--The elimination of 600 jobs announced yesterday by the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey represents a further blow to a city economy that has already absorbed more than 60,000 government job cuts in the past five years.

The cuts by an agency long known for its expansive vision and free spending are the latest proof that government is following private industry's downsizing example.

The Port Authority cutbacks are the largest in the agency's 74-year history. Federal, state and local government jobs in the city have declined by 10 percent since 1990, the year government employment peaked in the city with 607,600 jobs.
