Wearside transplant co-ordinators and patients have backed a radical overhaul of the current organ donation system.
The Government's Organ Donation Taskforce has said that major reforms are needed to boost organ donation and save thousands of lives.
These reforms include the recruitment of about 100 extra donor transplant co-ordinators to work with hospitals and guide and support bereaved families through the donation process.
The extra frontline staff and existing co-ordinators will be employed centrally by NHS Blood and Transplant rather than by individual hospital Trusts, which would mean an end to varied employment, and training practices.
