SPRINGFIELD - Hillary Clinton put on a sunny face in the Bay State before abruptly skipping her own downtown Hub fund-raiser as chief rival Barack Obama was essentially anointed by Sen. Edward M. Kennedy as the heir to John F. Kennedy's legacy.

"You have the opportunity to ask yourself the two most important questions: Who would be the best president on Day 1 and who is our best nominee to get elected?" said Clinton, a New York senator, toward the end of a 35-minute stump speech. It was the only veiled reference to Obama.
