Each year, Dana Ramos takes her class of third graders to Worcester City Hall to see the plaque that marks the spot at which the Declaration of Independence was read in the summer of 1776. While Ms. Ramos has always been stirred by the significance of the document, she said she never fully understood its connection to Worcester - that is, until earlier this month.
Ms. Ramos is among 240 teachers of history in the city's public schools who are required to receive training aimed at deepening their knowledge of the country's past. The teachers are split into groups of 60; each spends a day in lectures, discussions and workshops. During a recent ...
