THE National Right to Life Committee has estimated that more than 1 million Americans are alive today because of the Hyde Amendment. That's like saying that more than a million Americans are alive today because of Henry Hyde.
The former Republican congressman's own life came to an end on November 29, at the age of 83. He lived long enough to learn, a month before he died, that President Bush had awarded him a Medal of Freedom--a well-deserved capstone to a productive career as one of conservatism's great legislators.
