New York Senator John J. Marchi, who was first elected to the Senate when Dwight D. Eisenhower was president, announced in April he is ending what has been one of the longest political careers in the country. For 50 years, the 85-year-old Marchi has represented Staten Island, where an aquarium at the zoo and a ferry boat are named for him. A popular politician, Marchi beat the incumbent mayor, John Lindsay, in the 1969 Republican primary, stunning the city. Lindsay went on to win as a Liberal-Fusion candidate.
