With summer taking hold, the European Commission presented a scientific opinion on 6 July which will make for worrying reading for users of tanning lamps and sunbeds that give off ultraviolet radiation.
The Commission's Scientific Committee on Consumer Products (SCCP) has concluded that "the use of ultraviolet radiation devices clearly increases the risk of malignant melanoma of the skin", or in layman's terms, skin cancer. Whilst there are no "intrinsic differences" between the physical and biological properties of natural and artificial ultraviolet radiation, the intensity of radiation does differ according to exposure.
