Reducing health and environmental threats from toxic mercury pollution through an enhanced programme was the objective of an international gathering of environment ministers from 140 countries in Nairobi, Kenya, on 5-9 February. Under the auspices of the Governing Council-Global Ministerial Environment Forum of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the participants agreed to develop partnerships between governments, industry and other key groups to curb emissions of the heavy metal from power stations and mines to industrial and consumer products.
