NATO allies have for the first time adopted a common approach, agreeing to look into the political and military implications of setting up the US anti-missile shield in Poland and the Czech Republic, explained a NATO official during a two-day ministerial meeting from 14 to 15 June. No defence minister wanted to put the US plans on ice, which Russia would like to happen. Russia's counterproposal, made at the G8 from 7 to 8 June, to set up a US shield in Azerbaijan, was not greeted with enthusiasm.
