The European Commission is cautiously examining the Mediterranean Union (MU) project proposed by French President Nicolas Sarkozy. On the day following a speech which was supposed to be fundamental, on 23 October in Tangier, when the president proposed a summit of heads of Mediterranean states in June 2008 in France, his emissary is meeting with the EU executive for the first time to try to get it behind his project. Ambassador Alain Leroy, recently appointed to pilot the MU, meets with the Commission's services for the first time on 26 October in Brussels. A first contact described by the still-reticent Commission as "technical".
