European trade unions, who met for a congress in Seville on 21 May, want to "go on the offensive to make social Europe a reality," said European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) General Secretary John Monks. The Brit, a former acquaintance of Tony Blair, thus flayed the orthodoxy' of the European Commission, which he accuses of "holding back social and environmental progress [in order to] compete with less expensive countries". Now, "the key to economic success is not deregulation [but] a fruitful social partnership, collective negotiation [and] strong trade unions," he said. The ETUC is thus calling for all workers in the Union to find "a basis for common protection". ...
