The European Commission is to ask the Council to introduce control measures and criminal sanctions for the psychoactive substance called 1-benzylpiperazine (BZP). The Commission is acting on the advice of the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) and made this announcement on 17 July.
The order is based on Decision 2005/387/JAI of the Council and follows an evaluation of BZP's risks, as a psychoactive drug, by the EMCDDA. The centre identified that BZP can cause medical problems, even if its long-term effects are still not known.
