This is the second of a proposed three-volume biography of Henry Adams. In it Edward Chalfant covers the period from Adams' service as secretary to his father, Charles Francis Adams, to the aftermath of the suicide of his wife. During these years, Adams developed the technique of trying to affect events through anonymous publications and advice, as in managing the tense relations between the United States and Great Britain during the Civil War.
