Mamma Roma was first screened at the 1962 Venice Film Festival, where it was immediately sequestered on absurd charges of immorality and not released for theatrical distribution in Italy until a month later. It was shown in the United States only in 1990 at a Museum of Modern Art retrospective. The present version, released by Milestone Film (with the assistance of Martin Scorsese), has been struck from the original Italian negative with new English subtitles and represents the first American theatrical release of a film that is of great importance in Pasolini's collected cinematic works.
