Slowly but surely, we are beginning to sense a change in the conservation scenario in South Asia. Away from the media blitz and government funding is an entire genre of grassroots conservation that is redefining the way we shall view architectural conservation in the next decade. Be it the work of villagers in Basgo, Ladakh who restored and consolidated their 15th-century Buddhist temples or the case of the conservation of Altit Settlement in Gilgit, we are seeing initiatives that are bringing about a paradigm shift in the way we perceive heritage conservation.
