A professor at Stanford University's Graduate School of Business has completed new research applying operations research tools to revise kidney allocation for transplant waiting list candidates.
Reporting in the journal Management Science, Stefanos A. Zenios called for the definition of five distinct quality grades for kidneys. When a patient would join the kidney transplant waiting list, he/she would be given information on how long it would take to wait for each of these grades (higher quality is paired with longer waits and vice versa) and what the expected outcomes for transplanting each grade are, given that person's health profile.
