The development of federated searching, or metasearching, systems has become one of the phenomenal growth areas in academic libraries in the last five years. But what commenced as a simple idea--allowing the end user to search across a range of commercial databases simultaneously--has, in many ways, proved difficult to implement. Although it was easy enough to produce a single search box, it has proved difficult to produce meaningful results at the end of the search process.
