Congress should include in its federal economic stimulus package a provision to extend the life of tax breaks for renewable energy and energy efficiency.
Federal tax incentives that stimulate the green energy economy are to expire at the end of this year. Extending the incentives, adopted in 2005, would help to encourage job growth, reduce pollution and improve the nation's energy security for a value far exceeding the cost.
Without the tax breaks - which help green energy industries compete with the heavily subsidized oil, natural gas and coal industries - growth in renewable energy and energy efficient technologies is likely to be held back.
