Gazprom wants access to Nigeria's gas reserves, Africa's largest. It has approached the political leadership in Abuja on investing in Nigeria's energy infrastructure in a big way, in return for gas and oil E&P rights in the country, and on geo-strategic partnership. It is offering various downstream JVs, as well as having a stake in a gas pipeline to Europe planned to pass through Algeria. Gazprom and Sonatrach would be among the main foreign shareholders in the pipeline. Nigeria is the biggest oil exporter in Africa.
