OK, let's face the gimmick issue right off. Yes, Spencer Tunick photographs naked people--mostly youngish, rather attractive naked people--posing dramatically in the streets of major cities. His shoots, highly orchestrated affairs involving anywhere from a single nonprofessional "model" to two dozen eager volunteers, are often conducted like early morning guerrilla raids. And yes, he was arrested last December after snapping a male subject draped over an 8-foot-high Christmas bulb in Rockefeller Plaza [see "Front Page," Mar. '95].
But sensationalism apart, the 19 black-and-white photographs in this show actually affect the viewer rather like Fischl's early ...
