LOS ANGELES - Continuing their crackdown on sweatshops here, state and federal labor officials conducted an extensive sweep of contractor plants this week. And as part of the action, they looked for any connections to the now infamous El Monte, Calif., plant, where workers in a raid early last month were found to be working under what authorities said was virtual slavery.
In this week's sweep, investigators made surprise visits to 47 locations in Los Angeles County as well as others in Orange County, looking for labor violations, including industrial homework, minimum wage and overtime abuses.
