On 25 November 2007, in an undisciplined and gloomy post-election moment on the ABC's Insiders, Alexander Downer revealed that the aim of the intervention into Northern Territory Aboriginal communities was to generate 'electoral bounce'. Downer thought the intervention was popular, though it wasn't in the opinion polls nor, it now seems, among Aboriginal voters in Lingiari, where all seventy-three of the Intervention's prescribed communities are located.

This raises worrying questions about who it was popular with: the uninformed? those who condone racially discriminatory measures? those who are conspicuously compassionate about the nationally significant issue ...
