French beverage makers like PERNOD RICARD SA and REMY COINTREAU SA are focusing on top-branded products with higher margins, due to the surging demand for champagne products that pushed production capacity to its limits. Grape prices are increasing stridently because of rising demand and a limited growing area. The industry's future lies between top branded and high-end champagnes, with new interests for luxury drinks emerging from China and Russian markets. Prices for the three types of grapes used to make champagne, pinot noir, pinot meunier and chardonnay, increased by 6% in 2007, with average price increases of 2% a year since 1989.
