BATES - The ghost town of Bates will enjoy something of a rebirth as the remnants of its sawmill will be the site of Oregon's newest state park.
Bates, located about 48 miles from Baker City, pretty much folded when the Edward Hines Lumber Co. closed the mill in 1975. The company moved the equipment to John Day and sold the other buildings, including several dozen houses.
The state Parks and Recreation Commission has authorized spending up to $500,000 in lottery revenue to buy a 131-acre parcel that includes the site of the sawmill, the reason the company town was founded in 1917.
