According to a New York Supreme Court decision, if operators of computer networks screen electronic communications before placing them on the network, the company may be held responsible for libelous statements made on its systems.
The defendant, Prodigy, is an on-line computer information service provider that operates bulletin boards on a variety of topics. One board, called "Money Talk," covers financial information on topics such as stocks and investments. Prodigy members can post information and advice to the board for other members to read and comment on.
