THE $129.99 HP PHOTOSMART R742 proves that a budget-price camera doesn't necessarily have to demand lots of compromises. It delivers 7-megapixel resolution, image stabilization, a 3x optical zoom lens, handy shooting modes, and rugged construction. The camera functions best in bright and low-light situations (image quality can be uneven in moderately lit environments), but it delivered good photos overall.
