TOKYO, Feb 8 Asia Pulse - Japan's machine tool exports fell 1.6 per cent to 63.2 billion yen (US$588 million) in January, the first year-on-year decline in five years and four months, the Japan Machine Tool Builders' Association said Thursday in a preliminary report.

Overall orders, including domestic shipments, slipped 1 per cent to 118.7 billion yen, the first drop in 13 months.

Exports, which had helped prop up shipments, fell mainly because the information technology industry in Asia canceled some orders. Domestic shipments dipped 0.3 per cent to 55.5 billion yen.
