BALTIMORE, Md. - Acquiring a sizable international equity money manager is a top priority for Mark Fetting, Legg Mason Inc.'s new president and chief executive officer, and for the man he succeeds, founder Raymond "Chip'' Mason.

Mr. Fetting, previously senior executive vice president, was named to the top post on Jan. 28.

Sources said the Legg executives likely are looking at London-based firms such as F&C Asset Management PLC, Gartmore Investment Management PLC, Mondrian Investment Partners Ltd. and Threadneedle Asset Management Holdings Ltd., as well as the asset management arms of European financial groups.
