In marine ecosystems, seaweeds can account for an overwhelming majority of nearshore production and provide critical habitat for a variety of taxa. The interaction of seaweeds with their fluid environment can also dramatically alter the interplay of water and air with surrounding organisms. Due both to their importance in marine systems and to their use as an analog to plants in other systems, examining seaweed ecology and physiology is an appropriate topic for a book.
