The most expensive first novel in history was unleashed on the reading public Sept. 6, and though it's too early to put ``The Horse Whisperer'' in the winner's circle known as the best-seller list, it's a good bet it will do big business.
How can it not?
When Delacorte Press aped Hollywood by paying Nicholas Evans more than $3.15 million last fall for a book he hadn't even finished, a chain of events began that almost guaranteed best-sellerdom. Think of it: the unheard-of advance generated lots of press, lots of press generated big orders from booksellers, who logically figured the publisher would work hard to sell the book because it had paid so much for it. ...
