WASHINGTON _ John J. Sweeney, who this week won a bitter battle to lead the nation's labor movement, now faces a daunting war to win the hearts and minds of Americans who are skeptical about labor's relevance.
Sweeney is ambitious in his goals.
He's promising to organize masses of new workers, re-elect President Clinton, end Republican control of Congress, and derail the GOP's plans to scale back federal programs ranging from Medicare and Medicaid to job training.
``Brothers and sisters, in just six months we've changed the labor movement,'' Sweeney said after his election as AFL-CIO president in New York. ``Now we're going to change America.''
