Randy Newman once tried to write simple, normal, direct pop songs.

``I remember, back in '65, I tried,'' says the most savagely funny of veteran American pop composers, ``but I could never really write conventional love-song lyrics. I just got bored.''

This day, there's plenty to keep his boredom at bay. He's up at 7:30 a.m., watching cartoons with the two youngest of his five children _ Alice, 3, and Patrick, 1 _ and getting ready to spend the day ``waving my arms around in front of an orchestra,'' for the score of ``Toy Story,'' the Disney animated film due in November; it features Tom Hanks' and Tim Allen's voices and three new Randy Newman songs.
