NEWS FACT: An increasing number of Americans are becoming obese (extremely overweight). This is putting more people at risk for heart disease, cancer, and diabetes, among other illnesses. In some places, state and local governments are working to improve people's eating habits by passing new laws.
In Berkeley, California, for instance, health-zoning laws are limiting the construction of new fast-food restaurants. In Port Jefferson, New York, the village board has banned fast-food restaurants from certain areas.
