Vitamin D promotes the absorption of calcium and enhances bone formation. People who don't get enough vitamin D, either from their diet or from sun exposure, have an increased risk of bone fractures. Vitamin D is stored in our bodies for times when we're not able to make vitamin D. The best way to measure how much vitamin D a person has stored is to measure the amount of a substance called calcidiol in his or her blood. Researchers investigated levels of calcidiol in approximately 400 children and adolescents age 6 to 21 years in the Philadelphia area.
