Some signs of Middlesbrough's grand industrial past are still visible from the train that carries visitors into town from the mainline junction at Darlington; you pass the impressive green-painted steel towers of the Tees Newport Bridge, the first vertical lift bridge in Britain, built in 1934 by Dorman Long (who two years earlier had constructed Sydney's iconic Harbour Bridge).
