In accepting the Mark Hatfield/Barbara Jordan Political Courage Award from the Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty (BJC)-in 1999, Congressman Chet Edwards paid homage to Baptist statesman George W. Truett and Baylor University President Herbert H. Reynolds. Edwards recalled a conversation with Dr. Reynolds four years earlier that led to a turning point in his political career.
