In accepting the Mark Hatfield/Barbara Jordan Political Courage Award from the Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty (BJC)-in 1999, Congressman Chet Edwards paid homage to Baptist statesman George W. Truett and Baylor University President Herbert H. Reynolds. Edwards recalled a conversation with Dr. Reynolds four years earlier that led to a turning point in his political career. (1) Discussing the subject of religious liberty, Reynolds-offered to send him a copy of the speech Truett delivered on the steps of the U.S. Capitol in 1920.
