To define what it means to be Baptist can be a daunting task. This is due, in part, to the fact that there are a variety of Baptist expressions in America such as General, Free-Will, Progressive, Southern, and Cooperative. And Baptists are not "a monolithic church but a denomination of independent congregations" (p. 9). Variety and diversity certainly characterize the Baptist landscape. With this being the case, it can be equally as hard to identify what it means to be a Baptist institution of higher education.
