European consumers would have to spend an extra 29.4bn [euro]/yr if formaldehyde-based products were replaced by substitute materials. Formaldehyde, which is used in products like cavity wall insulation, has faced bans several times in the past. The 29.4bn [euro]/yr figure takes into account potential job losses within the industry and its customers, together with life cycle issues including the possibility that alternate products might have to be replaced more often, and large capital investments to produce and use replacement materials.
