This is a very heavy book, but I enjoyed it all the same. Connell has managed to bring together an enormous volume of information and condense it into a very readable text while still maintaining a feeling of the depth of background material used. The book is divided into six chapters that can be read in sequence or individually if you are interested in just one aspect:
