Tiny Sri Lanka has overtaken India, its giant neighbor to the north, as far as the export of tea is concerned. According to estimates prepared by a number of experts, Sri Lanka produced some 240,000 tons of tea in 1994, of which 219,000 tons were exported. India's exports amounted to a bare 150,000 tons during the same year. It would only be fair to point out that while India's export volume may have declined, its domestic consumption, along with its huge population, has continued to steadily rise.
