Autism cases continued to climb in California even after thimerosal was removed from most childhood vaccines, a January study found, adding to evidence that the vaccine preservative is not a primary cause of autism.

The study, published in the Archives of General Psychiatry, looked at the link between autism and thimerosal, a mercury-containing vaccine preservative that has been suggested as a cause of autism. The preservative was eliminated from childhood vaccines in all but trace amounts in California and throughout the nation in 2001, however, the number of autism cases increased in the state, the researchers found.
