Over the past 10-15 years, college accounting programs have faced declining enrollments, although some are now beginning to rebound. Part of the problem, at least in South Dakota, has been mandated curriculum changes at the secondary education level. Now more than ever before, additional courses are being required in math, science, English, and foreign languages, at least for those choosing a college preparatory track, leaving less time for business electives. Since many high school graduates begin college with an academic major already in mind, it is often too late for accounting programs to attract students who have not been exposed to what the profession has to offer. ...
