TOKYO, Feb 19 Asia Pulse - Tokyo Electron Ltd. (TSE:8035) announced Monday that it has established a joint venture with Sharp Corp. (TSE:6753) to develop solar cell manufacturing equipment.
The joint venture, known as Tokyo Electron PV Ltd., will be capitalized at 50 million yen (US$463,500), with Tokyo Electron to own a 51 per cent stake and Sharp to hold a 49 per cent interest. It will develop plasma chemical vapor deposition systems for thin-film silicon solar cells.
Sharp will install equipment developed by the new firm at its solar cell plant in Sakai, Osaka Prefecture, which is due to come onstream in fiscal 2009 .
