CALGARY -- Northern Border Pipeline Co.'s US$800 million plan to nearly double the capacity on its natural gas pipeline from western Canada to Chicago by 1998 will face a tough fight from rival Midwest transporter Natural Gas Pipeline Co.

The Illinois-based gas transmission company declared its backing for adding 700 MMcfd of capacity on Northern Border's northern section from Saskatchewan to Harper, Iowa.

But Natural Gas, which now collects Canadian gas shipments from Northern Border at Harper and pumps them into the Chicago market, doesn't want Northern Border building pipe parallel to its Amarillo line.
