Since most readers of this review teach or plan to teach literature, let us begin with the books from the past year likeliest to have an immediate effect on how we conduct our daily work. Canon wars are often conducted in an atmosphere of Laputan abstraction, our discussions of What Every Schoolperson Should Know generally overlooking the fact that much is decided by the publishers. Perhaps within a few years access to electronic texts will render this observation obsolete, but at present works are rarely taught and criticism little used if not in print and available at prices meant for people rather than libraries.
